Grade 1
Following the Terra Nova Testing, we will continue in Unit 4, Treasures to Share. our next two stories features families and what they treasure. Look for the Family Times page that comes home at the beginning of each selection. This contains some ideas to help your child at home.
You can have some family discussions about what you treasure, including the non-tangibles Christian values that we embrace.
Grade 2
Following Terra Nova Testing, we will begin Unit 5--Responsibility. We will reading about what it means to be responsible. Our selections include narrative nonfiction, realistic fiction, fantasy and humorous fiction. Look for the Family Times page that comes home at the beginning of each selection. This contains ideas for you to use at home.
You might want to have some discussions about responsibility, what can your child do to become more responsible, why is responsibility important, what are the hallmarks of responsibility, etc. Family discussions can help your child understand this concept and relate it to everyday life.
Grade 3
In March and April, we will explore various cultures; we will read about children and their families who live in America. Each selection features families and their cultural traditions. We will read narrative nonfiction and realistic fiction selections. Look for the Family Times page that comes home at the beginning of each selection with ideas for home use.
You can enrich your child's understanding of cultures by first examining your own heritage. Use a map or globe to locate the places where your ancestors were born. Discuss family traditions that spring from your heritage. This can lead to understanding and appreciating other cultures.
Grade 4
During March and April, we will examine Adventures by Land, Air and Water, our next unit. This unit includes: historical fiction, narrative nonfiction, science fiction and a journal. We will read about a family living on a ship, Machu Picchu, Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt, an explorer on Antarctica, and walking on the Moon!
Family discussions on adventures can broaden you child's understanding of adventures and why people seek adventures. Maybe your family can share memories of adventures, or plan a new one.
Grade 5
Our next unit details Adventurers: Who goes seeking adventure and why? Selections include humorous fiction, narrative nonfiction, an interview, science fiction and expository nonfiction. We will read about: a fictional character who has lived in three centuries; exploring the Titanic, talking with an astronaut and other adventures.
Some topics for family discussions could be: why people seek adventure; how the adventures of others have led to discoveries that benefit us, where would we be without people who seek adventures, etc. Encourage you child to explore this topic.
