A great deal of independant reading will be required from the students. This will enable them to have some idea of the material before they come to class and help them to participate in discussions and activities in class. Many of those activities will require a good deal of maturity of the students. At times they will be working with one or more partners. Have fun with your partners, but stay focused on getting the work completed. If your working on your own, again, stay focused on your work.
Building on what was learned in fifth grade, students will be asked to write at every opportunity. After reading material in their text, gaining a more thorough understanding of the material through class discussion, and digging for more info through various websites, they will then construct a 3 or 5 paragraph essay on the topic. The requirements of each paragraph are layed out for each essay, giving the student a clear outline for developing good paragraph and essay flow.
